FAQ:
Q1: What is the difference between die and punch?
A: During sheet metal forming, two different parts may be used. One
part is called the punch. It performs the stretching and bending or
blanking operation, while the other part is called the die block.
It securely clamps the work piece and provides similar stretching
bending or blanking operations.
Q2: How does a die punch work?
A: The action of a Punch & Die uses a solid metal piece, the
“Punch” located vertically above the “Die”. The Die corresponds in
size and shape to the Punch and is secured directly beneath the
Punch. The Punch is usually, hydraulically driven to meet the Die.
Q3: How many types of die are there?
A: Combination dies are used for operations involving more than one
operation on a work station. The major difference between compound
dies and combination dies is that in these dies a cutting operation
is combined with with a bending or drawing operation, and hence the
name “combination dies”.
Q: What are punch dies made of?
A: Punch tooling (punch and die) is often made of hardened steel or
tungsten carbide. A die is located on the opposite side of the
workpiece and supports the material around the perimeter of the
hole and helps to localize the shearing forces for a cleaner edge.
